About eight kilometres north-east of Ernakulam, near Kakkanad and the CUSAT campus, is the temple that Kerala's Onam story calls home. Vishnu is worshipped here as Vamana, the dwarf who measured the worlds in three strides and sent the good king Mahabali to the netherworld with a promise that he could visit his people once a year. The name is explained as Thiru-kaal-kara, 'the place of the holy foot'. The idol is a four-armed Vishnu of black stone about four feet tall, facing east, and the temple is one of the very few in India dedicated to Vamana and one of the 108 Divya Desams sung by the Tamil Alvars.
Beside the Vamana temple, in the same compound of more than eight acres, stands an older Shiva temple with a small swayambhu lingam said to have been worshipped by Mahabali himself, and a seat installed for the king before it. The clay pyramids placed on Onam flower carpets across Kerala are called Thrikkakarayappan after this deity. The temple has been under the Travancore Devaswom Board since 1949.
The legend is the Vamana story of the Bhagavata: Mahabali, grandson of Prahlada, ruled so well that he aspired to heaven itself, and Vishnu came to his sacrifice as a Brahmin boy asking for three paces of land. Two strides covered everything; for the third, Bali offered his own head. Tradition in Kerala holds that Bali's kingdom was here, that the third step fell on this spot, and that Onam marks his yearly visit. A second legend has the sage Kapila doing penance here and Vishnu choosing the place as his abode; the small pond inside the temple is Kapilatheertham. A darker tale explains the temple's long decline: a Brahmin boy wrongly accused of stealing plantains is said to have cursed it as he died, and his shrine as a Brahmarakshas stands in the north-east corner.
The temple's records contain what is often called the earliest mention of Onam, from 861 CE, and Nammalvar sang of the deity here in the eighth century. Local history says the Chera ruler at Mahodayapuram ordered the Chingam festival of this temple to be kept in every home, and that the chieftains of Kerala gathered here for twenty-eight days from Thiruvonam in Karkidakam to Thiruvonam in Chingam, a festival later shortened to the ten days from Atham. From about the twelfth century quarrels between rulers and trustees ruined the temple, until little more than the base remained. Sree Moolam Thirunal of Travancore restored it and reconsecrated the deity in 1921; it passed to the Travancore Devaswom Board in 1949, and the Shiva temple's buildings were completed in a renovation of 2014. When Kerala made Onam its state festival in 1961, Thrikkakara became its ceremonial centre.

Sabarimala pilgrims take their mala at the Sastha shrine.
The ten-day Onam festival in Chingam (August–September), from Atham to the Thiruvonam arattu, is enormous: the pakalpooram with nine elephants on Uthradam, the arattu night, and the Onasadya served to tens of thousands on the last two days. Shivaratri and Ashtami Rohini are also busy. Every Thiruvonam star day there is a tantri pooja and prasadam feast.
